Cannot add subtitle to my .mp4 video using VLC Player

I am trying to add selectable subtitle to my .mp4 video without any quality/resolution change as needed using VLC Media Player as suggested but the final product is either an error or video with no subtitle just an the original and same size. Tried to look it up with MediaInfo and indeed there's no subtitle there. I have ensured the subtitle .srt file to be same name as the video and tried with other videos but it doesn't work too.
